Hautalahdenkatu 2-4 Rental Houses

These affordable rental houses reinterpret the traditional Finnish Rintamamiestalo as a model for urban detached-house living, arranged around two shared yard streets. Future residents were consulted on layouts, fittings and façade colours.

Completed in 2002, these detached rental houses were inspired by traditional Finnish post-war front mens’ houses (rintamamiestalo). The 20 houses are arranged tightly around two slightly differently oriented shared yard streets. Their gables face the streets, recalling the spatial character of traditional East Karelian villages.

The project sought to develop an affordable urban model of detached-house living. Potential residents were consulted on the layouts and fittings of the houses and were also invited to propose colour schemes for the façades.

The two-storey houses provide 115 m² of living space and contain four to six rooms. The layouts can be adapted, particularly in the living room and kitchen areas, allowing residents to modify the interiors according to their needs. The affordable houses have proved popular with families.

Variations of this typology have also been built elsewhere, including the Housing Fair in Lappeenranta, Eastern Finland.

Olli Lehtovuori was responsible for the overall architectural concept. Implementation planning was carried out by Vesa Kauhanen.
