Nuora Building (alterations)

light blue timber house with white details and a fence around the garden.
Maija Holma / Alvar Aalto Museum

This originally one-and-a-half-storey log building was altered to form a two-storey building which housed a shop and café downstairs.

Three flats, each comprising one room and a kitchen, were squeezed into the top floor. The entrance to the flats was interesting in its complexity: an internal staircase rose first to a side balcony which gave access to an entrance corridor with the flat doors opening from it. One important and expressive detail was the balcony on the south side with its beautifully formed console-like supports.
