Villa Karpio
Villa Karpio, designed by Wivi Lönn and later altered by Alvar Aalto, features a modest extension and central hallway to adapt to its sloping site.
The Villa Karpio was originally a jugend style cottage, designed by Wivi Lönn, one of the first women architects in Finland. The building is situated on a sloping site, for which Alvar Aalto proposed some alterations in the early 1920s. Aino Marsio-Aalto and Alvar Aalto lived in the house while working and living in Jyväskylä in the 1920s.
Alvar Aalto drew up a fairly comprehensive repair plan. He added a central hallway which enabled him to build a two-storey extension and a garage on the steeply sloping site. In the end, the alterations were built in a significantly more modest form. The building was only one storey high, housing two rooms and a kitchen. The loggia-like veranda was also built smaller than originally planned.
