Harjannetie 44 Housing

The housing block commands a dramatic location on a rocky ridge overlooking the Vantaa river valley and rises like a gateway to the Viikinmäki district. The building offers an example of rental housing that is affordable without sacrificing outstanding design or quality of living.

The asymmetrical L-shaped frame provides space for roomy, sunny flats of varied floor plans. Most of the glazed balconies face the evening sun, while the east façade is dotted with bay windows. The ample sunlight and views of the landscape add eye appeal to the communal hallways. The block is 3–7 storeys high, with a communal sauna and cool-off facilities at rooftop level.

The greyish brown brick blends attractively with the natural hues of the bedrock. The building’s landmark status is emphasized by its lighting: at night it welcomes residents like a giant, glowing lantern.
