Moments from the 13th Alvar Aalto Symposium: Raul Pantaleo and Rahul Mehrotra

Architects should be more social actors in our communities. In our work we aim not only for the restoration of the physical conditions but also to the mental restoration of the users of the spaces. Architecture and architects have the great power of giving hope of a better future.

In Finland it has been great to see the works of Alvar Aalto. For me it has been an important experience seeing the humbleness in his work.

Raul Pantaleo is an Italian architect, born in Milan, he lives and works in Venice and Trieste. He is one of the co-founders of studio TAMassociati, a practice specialized in socially oriented projects in critical areas. He graduated from the IUAV University of Venice.

Rahul Mehrotra: Fail Better

Architects shouldn’t marginalize themselves from the society. Maybe not so much in Finland, but in many parts of the world architects don’t have a voice. The society will only respect us if they feel that we can make a difference to their lives.

We have to engage ourselves more and do more things despite difficult conditions. What I mean with the concept of failing better is that when you do these challenging projects there is a big risk to fail. But failure is an option! Many students come to thank me after presentations as usually architects only present successful projects. We should have a conference for failure. Actually, Archdaily should start a section for failures!

Rahul Mehrotra (b.1959) is a practising architect and educator. He works in Mumbai and teaches at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where he is Professor of Urban Design and Planning, and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design as well as a member of the steering committee of Harvard’s South Asia Initiative.
