Architecture and Empathy seminar will discuss mirror neurons with Vittorio Gallese

Celebrating the  centenaries of the births of Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) and Rut Bryk (1916–1999), two influential figures in Finnish design, the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation invites to participate in their third jubilee seminar titled “Empathy in Architecture – Emotion and Embodied Simulation in Design” on 21 April 2015 in Helsinki.

In addition to Dr. Prof. Vittorio Gallese , the co-discoverer of mirror neurons at the University of Parma, keynote lectures will be held by architect Sarah Robinson, author of the book Nesting: Body, Dwelling, Mind (William Stout Publishers, 2011), and internationally acclaimed architect, scholar and editor Harry F. Mallgrave, distinguished Professor of Architectural History and Theory at Illinois Institute of Technology. The seminar will be chaired by professor Juhani Pallasmaa.

Memories, dreams, and our imagination are linked inextricably with the objects of our lives and the rich associations we have with meaningful places. But in our culture’s steadfast dedication to consumption, we no longer mend, we discard.
― Sarah Robinson, Nesting: Body, Dwelling, Mind

The seminar will take place on Tuesday, 21 April, 2015 at 13:00 at the Finnish Film Foundation SES Auditorium Kino K-13, Kanavakatu 12, Helsinki. The event has a free entry and is organised by the TWRB foundation, the Asko Foundation and the Alvar Aalto Academy.
