Europan 13 launched: Finnish competition sites in Espoo, Seinäjoki and Jyväskylä

The 13th season of Europan architectural competitions is now open and offers three exciting competition areas in Finland for young professionals of the architectural and urban design. The generic theme is The Adaptable City 2 with three specific topics: Welfare State versus Self-organization; Segregation versus Sharing; and Object versus Project (process).

The three competition areas for the Europan 13 in Finland are located in Espoo, Seinäjoki and Jyväskylä. The Espoo site is located in rapidly developing Otaniemi: the contestants are asked to propose 25 000 m² of new housing for the project site for both university students and people working in the area and 5 000 m² of office space for research and administrational use.

The Seinäjoki site is the existing railway yard and the objective is to develop Seinäjoki railway station area into a versatile center where multiple functions, commercial services and housing come together. The Jyväskylä site is in the Kortepohja city district famous for the DOCOMOMO listed and the nationally significant modernist housing development from the 1960s. The contestants should densify the southern part of Kortepohja without losing the original characteristics and values of the area.
